Live Painting

KULTURTÅGET

Live Performance Mynttorget, Stockholm, 26 April 2026

On 26 April, artists, performers, and everyone who refuses to watch culture get quietly cut gathered at Mynttorget. Right in front of the palace. In public. To show why it matters.

Sweden puts 0.62% of the national budget into culture. The demand is at least 1%. That gap is stages going silent, projects shelved, kids losing access to music lessons, and school theatre and art classes. It is the slow erosion of the places where people think, meet, and say things out loud.

I was there to paint. No sketch, no plan. A large canvas held up in front of the crowd and a paint marker. Orbit Culture, Thrown, In Flames through the speakers. At some point I forgot the crowd existed entirely. So deep in the moment that the only thing that mattered was what was happening on the canvas right then. That is the whole point of live performance painting: you show up, you respond, and the work becomes a direct record of being in that place, at that moment, with those people around you.

There is something fitting about painting to metal at a cultural demonstration. Both exist in the space between urgency and precision. Both are louder than people expect them to be.

Kulturtåget was not a gallery opening or an invitation-only event. It was a public square, a microphone, and a lot of people who refused to be quiet about what is being stripped away. Painting there felt necessary.
